iPadpalooza 2k16 was definitely a great way to start off my summer. I found that sometimes in my position I get lost in the administrative aspects of the job. Events like iPadpalooza provide me the opportunity to get my "batteries" recharged and energized. This year I had the honor of participating in the Opening Mini-Keynote session at iPadpalooza. Each Mini-Keynoter had 3-4 minutes to, as Carl Hooker says, "Tell their one good story". These 4 minute stories set the tone for a very exciting and engaging. The story that I shared dealt with the concept of Innovation often begins with the question "Why Not". I shared the story of how my 5 year old daughter was coloring in the blank space of her coloring book. I told her that she is not supposed to color over there. She asked me "Why Not", there is so much blank space. That was an Ah Ha moment for me. I thought about how many times I have tried to make students stay within the lines and not provide them the opportunity to ask their "Why Not". It is important that students have time to work outside the lines. Picasso never colored by numbers...
Often in our quest to bring technology into education we fall short of our desired mark of transforming learning. I believe this is due to the desire to Integrate technology into instruction. Integration is the process of putting two things together to make something. If integration is our goal, we meet this mark every time we use technology. For example when students research a topic on Google and create a PowerPoint..Boom, Integration! Your students "made something". But, if you look at the definition of Innovation it states the process of creating "something NEW". Technology provides students and teachers the opportunity to create something new and share it with a global audience. Integration can be a step to Innovation, but don't limit yourself in the teaching and learning process...Why Not be an Innovator?
